The residency program consists of 5 clinical years and 2 research years. We target academically-minded
applicants for the six categorical general surgery positions that are offered annually.
Research time is typically taken between clinical years 2 and 3. A wide variety of research
opportunities exist within the department itself, which houses major investigative centers
in the areas of transplantation, oncology, and outcomes research.
A select cohort of our residents participate in the STAR (Specialty Training and Advanced
Research) program, fulfilling the requirements for a basic science Ph.D. in 3 years.

Our program is designed around the six core competencies established by the Accreditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education. These six areas serve as the central framework
for training and evaluation of our residents.

The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Board of Directors approved
institutional standards for resident duty hours in February 2003, to be implemented by July
2003. Here at UCLA we have taken this charge very seriously. Resident well-being has been
a priority not only for the program director, but also for the Dean of Graduate Medical Education.
The residents are asked to document work hours weekly on the Department of Surgery Intranet.
Our residency remains in compliance with the ACGME work hour policy.

Residents take the surgery Advanced
Basic Science In-Training Examination (ABSITE) in January of each year. The Wednesday
curriculum includes review sessions as the exam approaches, as well as regularly assigned
basic science readings and question-answer sessions.
Our graduates have historically done well on the written and oral components of the American
Board of Surgery Examination, with a first-time certification rate of >90%. The faculty
volunteer their time in providing mock oral board sessions for upper-level residents.
A wide range of housing choices are available within a short commute. Residents are eligible
to apply for university-sponsored housing, which includes options for married residents and
those with children.
UCLA Medical Center is located adjacent to the main university campus in heart of Westwood.
Sunny, temperate, and fashionable West Los Angeles encompasses neighboring boroughs of Santa
Monica , Beverly Hills , and Marina del Rey.
The area offers cultural, culinary, outdoor, recreational, and nightlife activities suitable
for any lifestyle.
