Program Description:
The goal of the swallowing disorders center is to provide comprehensive evaluation and management of
patients with swallowing disorders (dysphagia). Normal swallowing is an essential component of healthy
living, and is taken for granted until there is a dysfunction of the swallowing mechanism such as neurologic
injury, systemic medical disorders, cancerous and non-cancerous growths, and pharyngeal and esophageal pouches
can cause dysphagia. A unique group of physicians and swallowing therapists interested in the comprehensive
evaluation and management of dysphagia in a clinical and research setting is involved in the management of patients
seen in the swallowing disorders center.
Unique services provided at the swallowing center include:
- Comprehensive evaluation and management of swallowing disorders and its complications
- In-office esophageal endoscopy using a state-of-the-art trans-nasal esophagoscopy system
- In-office treatment of vocal cord paralysis and paresis with collagen
- In-office Fiberoptic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)
- Wireless pH monitoring (Bravo) for gastroesophageal reflux
- Management of upper esophageal sphincter dysfunction, including endoscopic resection of Zenker's diverticulum
