Description of Clinical Program

The Colorectal Surgery Service at UCLA offers the latest in specialized care for patients with diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. New and exciting cutting edge innovation in colorectal surgery are implemented to deliver state of the art care of these patients. Our specially trained Colon and Rectal Surgeons have an active interest in the areas of Anorectal Disorders, Colorectal Cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Pelvic Floor Disorders. In addition to their clinical interests, each faculty attending colorectal surgeon has active research interests in understanding the pathophysiology and optimal treatment of colorectal dieases. This allows rapid translation of advances in research to be applied in the clinical setting. Patient care is coordinated with a multidisciplinary team including experts in the fields of Gastroenterology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Pathology, Nutrition, Enterostomal Therapy, Nursing and Social Services. The latest ongoing clinical trials and experimental protocols are available to appropriate patients with complicated and serious colorectal problems. Every effort is made to coordinate care with the primary care and referring physicians, and to provide complete care of the whole individual. A full compliment of Medical and Surgical Specialists and Anesthesiologists and Pain Care Specialists are available around the clock to ensure delivery of the highest standard of care. The latest technological advances in imaging, including PET scanning, MRI, and helical CT are available in our specialized GI Radiology Imaging Center. Digital Endoscopy and Minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, as well as transrectal, transanal and endoscopic ultrasound are readily available and extensively utilized. By focusing our clinical efforts in these specialized area, our physicians are more experienced and therefore better able to produce predictable and reliably excellent outcomes even in the most complicated and difficult cases. Care is coordinated between UCLA-Westwood and UCLA-Santa Monica Campuses, offering superior availability if outpatient surgery services and outpatient doctor visits as well as inpatient and emergency care.
